How to Claim Your Google Business Profile

Instructions

Your Google Business Profile is one of the easiest wins for your online presence. It helps people find you when they search locally and adds credibility to your practice. Here’s how to take ownership of yours.

  1. Find your business: Go to business.google.com and search for your business name.
  2. Request to claim it: If your profile exists but hasn’t been claimed yet, you’ll see a prompt that says “Claim this business” or “Own this business?” Click it.
  3. Sign in to Google: Use your existing Google account, or create one if you don’t have one linked to your business.
  4. Verify your ownership: Google will automatically assign a verification method based on your business type and other factors. You don’t get to choose. The most common options are phone or SMS, email, video recording, postcard, or instant verification if your website is already connected to Google Search Console.
  5. Complete verification: Follow the prompts for whichever method Google offers you. Video verification has become the most common method for new profiles, and can take up to 3 to 5 business days for Google to review. Phone and email verification, when available, are much faster. Once approved, your profile is yours to manage.

What if someone else has already claimed it?

This can happen, especially if a previous employee or agency set it up. To request access:

  1. Go to business.google.com/add and search for your business
  2. Select “Request access” and complete the short form
  3. The current owner has 3 days to respond. If they don’t, Google will walk you through next steps.

What if my business doesn’t appear at all?

You’ll need to create a new profile from scratch. Head to Google Business Profile Manager to get started.
